Welcome to Bartow Elementary Academy's STEM Lab & Outdoor Clasroom
STEM/Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics has made its way into our classrooms at BEA. In today’s tech
savvy society the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math are in high demand globally. Here at BEA we are facing that challenge head on and raising the bar for our students to think outside the box. STEM education “attempts to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and that requires students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution.” (http://drpfconsults.com).

Fifth grade students conduct an independent experiment using a magnetic sensor to determine the magnetic field around a variety of objects. The educational model of the scientific method is followed in our experiments.

Above, second grade students pose for a group photo after using the weather center to gather data on current weather conditions. Right, fifth grade students conduct an experiment to find out which compost materials, nitrogen, carbon, or a combination, make the most soil.

New wireless technology in our Outdoor Classroom is used in monitoring current weather conditions any time of the day from any location in the world. The Davis Vantage Plus weather station sends a wireless signal to the receiver in the STEM Lab giving outdoor temperature, humidity, pressure, rainfall and wind chill and much more. Conditions are updated every 5 minutes. Also check out the default button for converting to metric measurements which enables us to do lots of math! We are grateful to our sponsors of the Southwest Florida Water Management District Splash Mini Grant and the NOAA Hirsch Grant for funding for our weather station.
